Dust Prevention Method| The Effective Solution Indoors & Outdoors


==Overview==
Nowadays, the public concern over the dust emission from manufacturing site is growing. The flying dust or aerosol are widely known to post serious health threat. Pneumoconiosis is one of the serious disease to be caused. This article focuses on the basic ideas of dust prevention. Matsushima Measure Tech's Air Dust Monitor and Air Particle Monitor are also introduced on the last chapter.

 

1.The Effect of Particulate Matter and Aerosol to Human Body

No matter how small the amount, the prolonged exposure to the flying dust would trigger various health problem. The one of the most serious disease is Pneumoconiosis. Pneumoconiosis takes many years to develop, however there is no fundamental treatment that makes a full recovery. Thus, implementing the proper health and safety measures are essential. The term “Pneumoconiosis” is defined as disease consisting mainly of fibrotic changes in the lung due to inhalation of dust in Japan’s Pneumoconiosis Law. The “fibrotic change” is irreversible changes that occurs when lung tissue is scarred and thickened due to the excessive dust inhalation. Aerosol is the extremely small particle of 0.001 to 10 micrometers, originating from natural source and anthropogenic source. It is also known to have an impact on our health and environment. For example, the aerosol produced by fossil fuel burning would cause serious air pollutions. It is strongly linked to the global warming and threatens human life at global scale.

2. Three Key Concepts for Dust Prevention

1. Do Not Generate Dust (= Improve work environment)
2. Do Not Spread Dust (= Use of Ventilation System)
3. Do Not Inhale Dust (= Use of proper Respiratory Protection Equipment)

 


3.How to Control the Dust Emission

A. Reduce the Dust Generation
i. Change Work Procedure
The implements of factory automation and remote-control system would reduce the chance for workers to dust exposure. Choosing the non-harmful material is also effective.
ii. Design "Dust-Free" Workplace
The dust continues to accumulate and build-up on the horizontal surface including the indoor beams, window frames and boundaries of floor and wall. These places are supposed to be designed to have sloped surface, or rounded form to prevent dust accumulation. The place for the dusty work shall be segregated so that the dust doesn’t travel around.
iii. Sealing Dust Source
Machineries are also the major dust source. Outlet and inlet are supposed to be sealed unless necessary.

B. Reduce the Dust Concentration
General ventilation system circulates the fresh outside air and reduces the dust concentration in the workplace. However, it is not effective enough under high level of dust concentration, or harmful dust environment. In that situation, ventilation should be carried out along with other countermeasures.

4.Monitoring the Dust Concentration 


A. Air Dust Monitor:
Monitoring the Dust Emission from Factory or Construction Site (Indoor/Outdoor).
Air Dust Monitor is specially designed for continuous dust monitoring for the machineries or construction site. It can be used regardless of indoor and outdoor because it is portable. It monitors dust concentration in real time and outputs alarm signal before flying dust causes a serious issue. It is also applied to monitor the bag filter condition, and provides the alarm for exchanging the filter.

Air Dust Monitor is easy to setup and maintain because it applies the triboelectric principle. You just need to select the measuring range and integration time before starting. As for maintenance, the probe, fan, and duct are supposed to be cleaned up on the regular basis. 



B. Air Particle Monitor
Monitoring the quantity and mass concentration of fine flying particles


Air Particle Monitor, applying the light-scattering principle, monitors the quantity and mass concentration of flying particle (0.3 micron or larger) including dust and aerosol in the atmosphere in real time. It monitors the working environment such as spaces with dust and clean rooms. By the signals of the analog output (DC4-20mA) and the contact output (1C), it can improve the energy saving effect in cooperation with the ventilation function, and it reduces the risk of instrument failure caused by the intrusion of dust into the panel. Also, since it is equipped with a Wifi function, the measuring values can be monitored in real time even from a remote location by connecting with mobile phones and PCs.
